Dan Hurley: A Winning Coach with a Captivating Personal Story

From Jersey City to Los Angeles

Dan Hurley's journey to coaching prominence is one of overcoming obstacles and embracing new opportunities. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Hurley played point guard for Seton Hall during his college days. After graduating, he spent a decade as an assistant coach at various universities before landing his first head coaching job at Wagner College. There, he led the Seahawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years.

A Turning Point

In December 1993, during his junior season at Seton Hall, Hurley hit a personal low point. Struggling with personal demons, he made the decision to leave the team and seek help for his substance abuse issues. This courageous decision set him on a path of recovery and growth that would ultimately shape his coaching career.

Rising Star

After his recovery, Hurley rejoined Seton Hall as an assistant coach before becoming the head coach at Rhode Island in 2012. There, he transformed the Rams into a consistent winner, leading them to three NCAA Tournament appearances and winning the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship. In 2018, he was named the head coach of the University of Connecticut, where he has continued his success, leading the Huskies to the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
